Tracking (Letter Spacing)

Tracking is the uniform adjustment of spacing across all letters in a block of text. Unlike kerning (which adjusts individual pairs), tracking applies the same spacing change to every character. In CSS, it's controlled with letter-spacing. Positive tracking spreads letters apart; negative tracking brings them closer. Headings often benefit from slightly tighter tracking (-0.02em to -0.01em). Body text usually looks best at default tracking. Uppercase text and small caps almost always need increased tracking (+0.05em to +0.1em) because capital letters are designed to be read with lowercase letters providing spacing rhythm.
