Variable Font

A variable font is a single font file that contains multiple variations of a typeface along one or more axes (weight, width, slant, optical size). Instead of loading separate files for Regular (400) and Bold (700), a variable font covers the entire range in one file. This technology, introduced in the OpenType 1.8 specification in 2016, reduces HTTP requests and total file size while enabling infinite design variations. Google Fonts supports variable fonts for many popular families including Inter, Sora, Lexend, and Plus Jakarta Sans. Variable fonts enable animations between weights and smooth transitions impossible with static fonts.
